The child’s first several dental visits are key in establishing a foundation for a lifetime of good oral health.  We recommend that you bring your child for an initial examination as soon as there are teeth present in the mouth which is typically around 1 year of age.  Even though we may not be able to perform any dental work on a child at that age, we may be able to spot signs of trouble early on and offer non-invasive intervention.  For example, babies who are bottle fed and who tend to be soothed to sleep with a bottle full of milk are prone to severe decay of their anterior teeth known as “Baby Bottle Tooth Decay”.  We would assess the dentition and can spot initial signs of decay and offer dietary modification such as replacing the milk with water to eliminate the problem.

Many times, parents wait too long before bringing their child to the dentist and typically do so because there is pain and require more invasive treatment as a result.  This is very unfortunate and we strive to educate new parents of these issues.  Some common dental issues that children face aside from tooth decay include such things as crowding, dental trauma, gingivitis (inflammation of the gums), abscesses or infections.  Children may also have primary teeth that are wiggly and causing discomfort or ones that simply refuse to fall out and cause crowding.  Permanent teeth issues could also exist and include impacted teeth (teeth that are “stuck” and cannot fully erupt into normal position) and sometimes even teeth that fail to form.
