Dental X-ray images (“radiographs”) are essential for the diagnosis of many conditions affecting teeth and their supporting structures. They help visualize cavities and other tooth disorders.  They help identify diseases of the gums, jawbones and teeth.  Without radiographs, a cavity may go undetected until it is much larger and closer to the nerve of the tooth and thus more likely to cause pain.

When a cavity is close to the nerve, it typically necessitates more invasive treatment, carries an increased risk for post operative discomfort, higher treatment cost and lower chance of treatment success.  In extreme cases, a decayed tooth may be unrestorable, necessitating its removal.  We recommend that you never wait for symptoms to appear before deciding to have your radiographs taken.  The dentist will determine at what frequency your radiographs should be taken based on your particular state of oral health.  This will provide you with the assurance that as much information as possible was captured during your exam to establish a proper diagnosis and a suitable treatment plan.
